Duty Time Logging

Duty Time (sometimes referred to as Work Time or On-Duty Time) represents the total period during which a crew member is on duty β€” from report time until release. It typically includes briefing, pre-flight preparation, all flights performed during the day, in-flight rest on augmented crews, post-flight duties, and debriefing.

Logging duty time is optional and must first be enabled in Settings if you wish to track it β€” ⬇️ see below for setup instructions.

⚠️ Note: Duty time is not part of standard licence-level flight logging, but it is commonly required for FTL compliance and fatigue management by airlines and commercial operators. Always consult your operator or national aviation authority for the specific rules applicable to your operation.

Two Ways to Log Duty Time in FLYLOG.io

1. Duty Time Attached to a Flight (Most Common)

When a flight also requires duty tracking β€” for example, airline pilots logging report and release times alongside block time β€” enter both within the same flight form. This is the most common workflow when duty begins before the flight (briefing, pre-flight preparation) and ends after the flight (post-flight duties, debriefing).

πŸ’‘ Tip: Duty time before and after a flight is completely normal. Many airline pilots log approximately 60–90 minutes before pushback (reporting, briefing, pre-flight preparation) and 15–30 minutes after on-blocks (post-flight duties, debriefing). Always follow your operator’s procedures and official reporting/release times.

2. Duty Entry Without a Flight or Seat Time

For situations where you are on duty but not actively flying, or when part of the duty period does not qualify as flight seat time, create a separate "Duty" entry.

Typical examples include:

  • Cruise relief / bunk rest on augmented long-haul operations (e.g., P3 / Third Pilot / P2X)

  • Standby or reserve duty that did not result in a flight

  • Positioning / deadheading as a passenger

  • Ground duties such as simulator sessions, briefings, recurrent training, or ground school

  • Airport standby that expired without callout

πŸ’‘ Tip: On augmented crews, in-flight rest still counts as duty time, but under strict EASA interpretation only actual seat time qualifies as flight time. Use the role selector in the flight form (PIC, SIC, P3, etc.), record the actual seat time as block time, and log the remaining duty period as a separate Duty entry β€” or use Labels or Custom Fields to distinguish the periods within a single entry.

How to Enable and Use Duty Time

  1. For Flights With Duty Time Included

Mobile App:
Tap the + button β†’ enter the flight details β†’ fill in the Duty Time fields alongside Block Time.

Web App:
Go to Flights β†’ click the + button β†’ enter the flight details β†’ fill in the Duty Time fields alongside Block Time.

  1. For Duty Time Without a Flight (standby, training, positioning, etc.)

Mobile App:
Tap the + button on the main screen.

Web App:
Go to Flights β†’ click the + button β†’ select Duty β†’ complete the form.
